The elementary finalist in Region 2 is Laura Moyers. She teaches music at Anthony Elementary School in Leavenworth.
Students have the opportunity to be leaders/teachers in the classroom. Laura created the L.A.M.P. program which allows older students to mentor younger students. They use sign language to communicate, and use music software to work on basic skills. They progress through lessons in keyboard, guitar, and recorder class. Students also perform in class, choir, concerts, and talent shows. Her students have won over $16,000 in grants and contests including the 20th Century Fox Glee Give a Note and the Glee/Apple & Eve Mash up. Laura, who is a talented ventriloquist, also integrates puppets into her lessons.
Her favorite activity is “Voiceprint,” a program she designed for children to create and record their own music. Student recordings are compiled over the course of three years, enabling students – and their parents – to hear their growth.
Laura uses her gift of music to benefit the community. She wrote, recorded, and produced a CD titled, “Soldiers Tribute,” dedicated to the men and women in our Armed Services. The sale of this CD has generated thousands of dollars in donations to organizations such as Wounded Warriors, Army Community Services, ASYMCA, Gold Star Mothers, and Support our Troops & Vets. Laura also has given and performed free concerts in Kansas and five other states to highlight the sacrifices of those in the Armed Services.
